Proyecto Cerralvo

Focused on community-led scientific research that informs the creation of baseline data to support policy efforts that protect the biodiversity of the area.

The area around Cerralvo Island is highly biodiverse yet has not been studied in depth. Although it is not officially designated as a protected natural area it is a sanctuary for many marine species that come throughout the year to feed and reproduce. As well as a place that has provided sustenance to coastal communities that have lived off what the sea offers for generations. Now, its abundance is being threatened by industrial fishing and the growing, unregulated pressure of extractive forms of tourism.

Orgcas is working with researchers and locals to generate baseline data that will support and promote the creation of a marine reserve that legally protects Isla Cerralvo, while also considering the livelihood of its people. Doing this through a community-driven approach that combines local ecological knowledge and scientific research is a radical shift from traditional methods that lack an understanding that is inclusive of the relationship between ecosystems and people.
