Proyecto Tiburón

An initiative supporting shark fishermen in the transition to becoming ocean stewards.

The Agua Amarga community is located 50 km south of La Paz, between the Ventana Bay and Ensenada de Muertos. The locals have passed down the knowledge of artisanal shark fishing from generation to generation, which has been their main source of economic sustenance for years. They know these waters like the back of their hand, and their eyes have seen the countless species that inhabit this area, including some that science has yet to record.

During their lifetime, they have witnessed first-hand the loss of biodiversity
and its impact on both the ecosystem and their livelihood.

In 2021, Orgcas partnered with the Agua Amarga shark fishermen to create ocean expeditions with the aim of replacing shark fishing with a new dignified economic alternative that sustains their community.

Orgcas is working to provide the fishermen with the necessary infrastructure, such as materials, equipment, planning, and training, to carry out conservation tourism that values their local knowledge and reduces the pressure on ecosystems and its species. While simultaneously restoring their relationship with the ocean, and empowering them to protect it.
